IBM Study: Canadian Workers Embrace AI Faster Than Their Employers

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already part of daily work for most Canadians, but companies are struggling to keep up. A new IBM study reveals that while 79% of office workers use AI tools on the job, only one in four relies on enterprise-grade solutions.

This growing trend, known as “shadow AI,” emerges when employees turn to personal AI applications without oversight from their company’s IT department. According to IBM, the practice creates risks ranging from data leaks and compliance failures to the loss of sensitive business information.

Despite these concerns, the benefits are clear. The study shows that 97% of workers believe AI boosts productivity, and nearly 80% say it frees them to focus on strategic or creative tasks. More than half reported saving between one and three hours per week thanks to AI.

Yet workers see a disconnect. Only 29% believe their employers are maximizing AI’s potential, with skepticism strongest among those aged 45 to 54. The consequences for employers could be severe: 46% of employees said they would leave their job for a company that uses AI more effectively—a number that rises to 62% among Gen Z.

“AI adoption in the workplace is no longer theoretical—it’s happening, and it’s being driven by employees,” said Deb Pimentel, President of IBM Canada. The company urges organizations to invest in secure infrastructure, responsible AI frameworks, and inclusive training to harness AI’s value safely and effectively.

The study also highlights where employees see the greatest impact: data analysis (60%), automation of repetitive tasks (55%), and content creation (37%). IBM experts stress that companies that act quickly to close the gap between enthusiasm and readiness will not only protect their data but also unlock significant productivity gains.
