Montreal and Toronto Get AI Power Boost with IBM’s New Cloud Infrastructure

IBM has announced two major advancements in its cloud infrastructure in Canada, aiming to empower local organizations to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) while meeting strict regulatory requirements. The company officially launched a new Cloud Multizone Region (MZR) in Montreal, Quebec, adding to its existing infrastructure in Toronto. These investments are part of IBM’s ongoing efforts to support industries such as finance, healthcare, and government in securely scaling AI applications while maintaining data sovereignty and compliance with Canadian privacy laws.
A key highlight of the announcement is the availability of the IBM watsonx portfolio on IBM Cloud at the Toronto MZR. This enables Canadian businesses to build, deploy, and manage generative AI solutions locally without compromising speed, security, or scalability. IBM Cloud’s infrastructure is optimized for AI workloads, offering GPU-based servers, bare metal, and virtualized environments. This allows organizations to run mission-critical workloads with low latency and high performance while storing sensitive data in-country.
Montreal MZR
The Montreal MZR adds further resilience and geographic diversity, giving clients nationwide access to cloud-native services such as IBM Cloud VPC, Red Hat® technologies, IBM Power Virtual Server, and VMware Cloud Foundations. It also supports an open hybrid cloud strategy, allowing integration with multiple cloud platforms and traditional IT environments. These capabilities are essential for businesses looking to modernize operations and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
With the addition of these capabilities, IBM is not only expanding its physical presence but also reinforcing its commitment to secure, responsible AI. The cloud regions align with Canada’s Protected B Medium Profile security standard, ensuring organizations in highly regulated sectors can meet compliance requirements while innovating confidently.
North America cloud strategy
These developments underscore IBM’s broader North American cloud strategy, which includes MZRs and data centers in Washington, D.C., Dallas, San Jose, Toronto, and now Montreal. By enabling AI scalability and regulatory compliance, IBM is helping Canadian organizations transform digitally—safely and strategically.
